Confidence is Key: Capstone Project
Confidence is Key was held on November 9,2016, at the YWCA in downtown Richmond. This Capstone was a confidence workshop for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. The project was planned and executed by senior India Hawkins. The goal of this Capstone was to increase confidence in women. The workshop consisted of dinner, catered by Sweet Teas Restaurant, a makeup and pampering class, and two local speakers, LaWanda Woods and Sarah Thieme. From 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm the women were pampered and shared their own stories while being inspired by their peers. Dinner was approximately from 5:30pm- 6:00pm. It consisted of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, fried fish, cabbage, and cookies to leave a sweet finish. Mrs.Winnie, a Mary Kay representative, taught a pampering class centered around self love. She focused on how to improve one’s skin, makeup tips, and different relaxation methods. The women started to really increase interest in the activities and even started to feel comfortable with telling their personal stories. It inspired Ms. Woods, one of the speakers, to go a different and more improvised route in her speech. Ms. Woods was then followed by Ms. Thiemes who led a short but inspiring session. Although the event ended a little later than expected, the smiles on the women’s faces made it all worth it.
